Kindling for Firewood

Use Kindling to start a fire. Place the kindling in a pile and place a lit firelighter under the pile. The kindling should catch alight quickly. Then place the larger pieces of wood on top of the burning pile of kindling.

Kindling is defined as easily ignited material. Which is exactly what you need to get your fire started. There are a variety of types of kindling.

The most common form of kindling is small shards of wood or little sticks, usually collected after a cord of wood has been split and the logs are ready for the fire.

Kindling is also often made up of twigs which can be collected if you live near a wooded area.

Pine twigs have been known to accelerate burning because of the resin contained in them. This makes them very popular. Sometimes this type of kindling is referred to as 'fatwood'.

But if you find yourself in an urban space and you can't just go out and collect sticks and twigs for kindling you can make your own by chopping one of your firewood logs into smaller shards which will catch fire easily.

Tightly wadded paper does help to start a fire but because it will by nature burn quickly it is often burnt out before the fire has actually started properly.

If you lay kindling start by setting the thinner and finer pieces on fire first, graduate the the thickness of the kindling until you have a small fire and only then add your smaller pieces of firewood.
